Art History Quiz Bowl Questions
December 20, 2012 Visual Arts Classic Coaches and Chairs, While your students are preparing fabulous projects for VAC 2012, do not forget to have them write some top notch questions for the Art History Quiz Bowl. It is advantageous to submit questions, because your team will know the answer! The questions that the students create may include images, fill in the blank questions, or questions that have the artist's name or other pertinent information as the answer. No True or False questions please. Please have Art History Quiz Bowl questions and answers submitted by Saturday February 4, 2011! Be sure to include the sources of information. Incorporating technology, research, and writing into the visual arts classroomWith more and more curricular expectations being added to the plates of teachers each year it is challenging to come up with innovative assignments to engage young artistic minds that also meet new requirements in school curriculum. This fall I was seeking a novel research assignment for my high school Art Portfolio course, where students focus on one artist and two art mediums of their choosing. My inspiration turned up in the mail the next day with the arrival of the latest issue of Art Education NAEA, this edition contained an article by Julia Marshall and Kimberly D’Adamo titled Art Practice as Research in the Classroom. The project described by Marshall and D’ Adamo incorporated four important areas of research: description, analysis, reflection, and connection. I took these four areas and asked my students to apply them when creating their own iGoogle artist websites. To demonstrate their understanding of description they were asked to write a clear explanation of the visual characteristics of one of the works of art. Students were asked to provide analysis on a second piece of artwork created by their chosen artist. To demonstrate their ability to analyze the students could focus on the intentions of the artist, the meaning behind the cultural contexts in which the artworks were made, or the way meaning of the work are expressed visually. Students were asked to give a personal reflection on a third piece of artwork, finding a deeper meaning. It is important for students to make connections in everything that they are asked to do; for this part of the assignment students were asked to use one of two basic applications in order to make their connections with their forth piece of artwork. They could associate the artwork and culture to reveal an underlying theme or they could relate researched artworks and themes to their own work as a student artist. Since students were expected to put all the information on their website into their own words they were also applying their skills in writing and grammar to the area of visual arts & design while using technology. This lesson is ready to be used in your classroom or your students might find it helpful exercise when preparing for Visual Arts Classic 2012. Dorothea Lange 6. Jenny Holzer 7. Betye Saar 8. Faith Ringgold 9. Elizabeth Catlett 10. Richard Notkin 11. Ken Burns 12. Norman Rockwell The following shows the updated WAEA approved prompts for Ceramics & Sculpture: The wording of the two prompts have been changed to be more general in scope Ceramics– Long Term-Create a hand-built, wheel-thrown or a combination teapot which makes a visual commentary about a contemporary (social or political) issue. (You must have spout, handle and lid, but does not necessarily need to be a functional teapot.) Sculpture– Long Term- Metaphors are comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way, they make you think, inviting you to analyze how two subjects relate. Metaphors are a way to describe something, a tangible thing to represent a less tangible thing, adding a creative aspect to a figure of speech. Create a sculpture showing a metaphorical representation of a historical figure.
