Finding Enrichment Activities for Students
With fewer and fewer full time Arts & Design jobs available in Wisconsin, art & design teachers need to demonstrate what they can do for students in the classroom and beyond. I want to highlight several programs that teachers can have their students become involved in.
The Visual Arts Classic program sponsored by WAEA is a great opportunity for high school students to showcase their individual artistic talents and abilities to work as a creative team. Students create long-term projects based on the prompt for their chosen studio category. Once students arrive at the regional competition they construct an onsite art piece using the limited materials they were asked to bring in response to the presented prompt. Students use their cooperative skills to create a critical thinking presentation and to compete in the Art History Quiz Bowl.
I have found it valuable to have my students participate in the other WAEA/ NAEA activities as well. I sent several pieces of student artwork to the Northwest Regional Youth Art Month show in March. Three of the student YAM pieces were displayed at the Capitol in Madison, WI. I will also be traveling with a group to Milwaukee to participate in the Visioneer’s Design Challenge where students will have the opportunity to work with designers who are currently working in their chosen field.
Finally another way to enhance student’s artistic lives is to create a chapter of the National Arts Honor Society through NAEA for students who have a “B” average or higher in arts & design courses.
Venturing outside the world of WAEA/ NAEA there are many local state and local programs that can deepen students connection to the Visual Arts. One such program is VSA Wisconsin, a program designed to help students and adults with special needs expand their horizons through art, music, drama, creative writing, and dance. It is also important to have students seek enrichment activities in and around their local community. Local community events might include: programs through local arts councils, t-shirt design contests for area events, local arts shows/competitions, 4-H fairs, and many other unmentioned events.
Please continue to enhance the art & design programs in your districts. If you have any questions about VAC or my students’ involvement in any of the other programs please contact me using the information below.

Incorporating technology, research, and writing into the visual arts classroom
With more and more curricular expectations being added to the plates of teachers each year it is challenging to come up with innovative assignments to engage young artistic minds that also meet new requirements in school curriculum. This fall I was seeking a novel research assignment for my high school Art Portfolio course, where students focus on one artist and two art mediums of their choosing. My inspiration turned up in the mail the next day with the arrival of the latest issue of Art Education NAEA, this edition contained an article by Julia Marshall and Kimberly D’Adamo titled Art Practice as Research in the Classroom.
The project described by Marshall and D’ Adamo incorporated four important areas of research: description, analysis, reflection, and connection. I took these four areas and asked my students to apply them when creating their own iGoogle artist websites. To demonstrate their understanding of description they were asked to write a clear explanation of the visual characteristics of one of the works of art. Students were asked to provide analysis on a second piece of artwork created by their chosen artist. To demonstrate their ability to analyze the students could focus on the intentions of the artist, the meaning behind the cultural contexts in which the artworks were made, or the way meaning of the work are expressed visually. Students were asked to give a personal reflection on a third piece of artwork, finding a deeper meaning. It is important for students to make connections in everything that they are asked to do; for this part of the assignment students were asked to use one of two basic applications in order to make their connections with their forth piece of artwork. They could associate the artwork and culture to reveal an underlying theme or they could relate researched artworks and themes to their own work as a student artist.
Since students were expected to put all the information on their website into their own words they were also applying their skills in writing and grammar to the area of visual arts & design while using technology. This lesson is ready to be used in your classroom or your students might find it helpful exercise when preparing for Visual Arts Classic 2012.
