Youth Art Month 2013
Remarks – Julie Palkowski

Good afternoon.  My name is Julie Palkowski and I am the Fine Arts and Creativity Education Consultant for the Division of Academic Excellence at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.  I bring you greetings from State Superintendent Tony Evers.  It is a pleasure to be a part of today’s ceremony recognizing the artistic accomplishments of our young people and the adults who support them through the Youth Art Month exhibit.

In my role for the state of Wisconsin, I’ve had the privilege of visiting arts classrooms, working with fine arts teachers, connecting with our state’s arts organization officers and volunteers, as well as listen to many parents and community members.  From each end of Wisconsin, I’ve been blessed to capture amazing arts experiences such as in Wausau where students with disabilities created shadow puppets to tell stories, in Baraboo where music students identified the musical and historical elements of the Lincoln Portrait, to Fort Atkinson where art students with their school community created a mural to celebrate service activities.  These are just a few stories.  Many more of these fantastic events are happening each day across Wisconsin.  A few of these stories are depicted here through the beautiful artistic pieces we see displayed for the Youth Art Month exhibit.  The students have shared their artistic stories with us, giving us reason to think more deeply about the role a quality arts education plays in the lives of our children.

Within the January issue of the Association of Supervision Curriculum Development Education Update, ten reasons why arts education matters are highlighted.  An Arts Education:

1.       Increases student engagement,

2.      Instills positive behaviors,

3.      Enhances creativity,

4.      Sharpens critical thinking skills,

5.      Widens a student’s interaction with multiple languages (whether visual, contextual, or verbal),

6.      Expands the context of other content areas,

7.      Offers exploration beauty, emotion, and conflict,

8.     Supports the use of collaboration and teamwork,

9.      Offers possibilities for career pathways, and

10.  Builds true engagement, turning ideas, practice, and play into action.

These 10 reasons collectively build a thorough and comprehensive education through the arts.  The arts are a valuable part of the education we provide across Wisconsin.  The arts provide multiple areas of engagement which enhance the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical aspects of a learner’s journey.  As past arts editor and expert, Charles Fowler stated, the arts are the fuel that “ignites the mind, sparks aspirations, and illuminates the total being.”

We applaud the efforts of our young people across the state and those today, which have showcased their talents within this exhibit.  We thank those honored today for sharing their aspirations and artistic stories with us. They have helped ignite our minds. We are also grateful to the dedicated educators and parents who continue to build our young people up in their educational paths.  We finally offer a special thank you to our sponsoring arts organizations for supporting the arts across Wisconsin.

Congratulations to our talented student artists.  Thank you for being here.
