Visual Arts Classic

The school year is soon coming to a close as I write my last article about Visual Arts Classic.  But first, let’s take a look back to April and the Humanities Building where our last State meet was held.  The day was wonderful with students from 49 teams statewide competing!  There was a fantastic energy level all through the day that eventually found it’s way over to Grainger Hall for the group competitions.  The day concluded with the award presentations.

So many thanks go out to folks who helped make VAC a great success over this past year.  To begin, for Teri Marche` and Doug Marschalek, our hosts for VAC at UW-Madison who thought of everything.  Once again, they did an outstanding job and we so appreciate all that they do.
In addition, to Joe Clark for creating such beautiful ceramic trophies!  This years pieces are absolutely stunning works of art.  Thank so much for your continuing support for our art event.

Also, many thanks go out to our regional chairs!  There is a tremendous amount of planning and work that is attributed to regionals that does not go unnoticed.  We had a few new Regional Chairs this year, Libby Hansen, Broderick Barrett and Rochelle Robkin.  We had a total of 7 regional sites this year, thanks to UW Baraboo.  For next year, Jay Solwold and Beth Schleiger will be taking the place of Rebecca Diener at regional chairs; thanks Rebecca for all your years to VAC.

Lastly, I’d like to thank coaches, parents, judges and volunteers for their continued help in making VAC a great success for our young people!

I personally want to thank Nancy Zabler and Terri Colamatteo for their unending assistance to me on all the little things that make this event so successful!  I was honored to be a part of a great team, thanks!

My role next year has changed as I will be an elementary teacher and for that reason, I’ve stepped down as State Chairperson.  Danielle Penney, of Mellen High School, has enthusiastically stepped forward to take on this new position.  Dani knows that I will be there, albeit from the sidelines, to help her continue in the spirit of VAC that was handed down to me.   Please welcome her and assist her with quick responses to correspondence throughout the year.

It has been my pleasure to be involved with the Visual Arts Classic over these past years.  Each year the venue changes just a bit and this year we made a huge leap into the 21st century using technology to run VAC more efficiently for the people behind the scenes.  I created a spreadsheet to use on the computer in place of the hardcopy of tally sheets.  It worked great; our tally room ladies were pleased and had huge smiles on their faces all day!  In addition, the gallery was open until 4:00 to keep the artwork up longer for viewing.  Finally, I asked that Team Registration Sheets be sent to me prior to State; all but four coaches emailed them in.  What a time saver in the tally room; team registration was entered into the computers well before the day.

Once again this year, we are using Wiki as a tool for coaches to get involved in the process of creating the prompts for next year, “Art As Commentary”.  The planning meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 21st and will be held at Portage High School.  The WAEA Visual Arts Classic will again be hosted by the UW-Madison Art Department on Friday, April 13, 2012.  Mark your calendars.  Please email any and all suggestions to me, Nancy or Danielle and get involved to make Visual Arts Classic a continued source for our young people who love the arts!  I cannot say enough wonderful things about Visual Arts Classic; I am proud to be a part of such a fantastic organization!

Thanks so much, Valerie Banks
