Since cell phones and I-Pads/Pods have emerged into the classroom scene, I find myself slowly adjusting to the new technology phenomenon. Don’t get me wrong, I think technology is wonderful and there are so many uses for all those wonderful devices! The two high schools that I teach at have now implemented Wi-Fi in the buildings. This gives students as well as teachers direct and constant access to the World Wide Web. Students are also allowed to access social media sites 30 minutes per day during their lunch hour. I bet you can guess that they access this whenever they can. It doesn’t matter how often you tell them to put them phones away, as soon as you turn your back, bingo they are texting away! As educators, I think it is important for us to find ways to use this technology instead of us becoming cell phone prison guards. As the title suggests; time to pick your battles in the classroom! Some things I have tried this year that seem to be working; 1. Almost every student seems to have a cell phone. The one or two that doesn’t have a phone are allowed to use my computer to look up images. 2. Have students use those phones during class time to look up ideas or images for their project assignments. Remind them texting isn’t allowed, but image lookup is. Most students prefer looking for an image on their phone compared to looking in a book? I do have both available, but students often need a larger image to look at. 3. Self-Portraits, something new I tried this year, (instead of taking their digital image in class) I told them to find one of their portraits that they had on Facebook and email it to my school address. They really seemed to like this idea! I only had a few photos that I had to take. Less work for you and students have more accountability in getting the picture to you. Students then use that image and a mirror to draw their self-portraits. 4. Students who finish assignments early should have the opportunity to use special apps that apply to drawing or art design. Many of these apps can be downloaded for free. The only tricky thing about this is that you have to trust your students and make sure they are using the apps not playing games. 5. One other observation I noted this year, students will use their phones to take pictures of what they are drawing and use that picture at home to draw from. At the high school level, we stress drawing from observation, so this is one phone application I think we should monitor. This is drawing from a picture not real life! A hope this gives you some ideas on how you can use those cell phones in your classroom, remember to pick your battles and be pro-active about using technology. Feel free to email with any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful New Year! Carol Rokicki at: secondary@wiarted.org | ||||||
