I grant you technology! This year I was “Granted Technology.” I wrote a grant to the Black River Falls Area Foundation in order to purchase 30 digital cameras for the art classroom. My goal was to add a digital photography component to the art curriculum. This type of technology integration will augment instruction while teaching students skills that will help them become lifelong learners in the digital age. It is my belief that digital cameras and technology in the classroom will help to develop problem-solving skills, use visualizations to demonstrate understanding of concepts and improve proficiency with technology. I wanted a camera that was very easy to use and inexpensive. I found a point and shoot that did not have many buttons. In fact camera this camera only has four! Students find using the cameras very easy even though the quality is not professional grade. My goal was to find a camera that students would feel comfortable with and they do. My students have demonstrated their photography skills by looking for patterns in the art room, owl portraits, and photos of their leaves. I would like to be rock! I have Pinterest on the brain. Most people ask pin-WHAT? According to the website pinterest.com “Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard. Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. To get started, request an invite.” I personally use Pinterest to look for amazing lessons and inspiration in my classroom. While using Pinterest I have found that it is very important for me to set a time limit for my browsing. I started out with a 2 hour block, but now that I know what I am doing I check and browse only a few minutes a day. My favorite part of the site is that you can follow other pinner’s boards. If you follow other art teacher’s boards you will have a wealth of lessons on your virtual bulletin board in no time flat! Pinterest also allows you to have different bulletin boards all at one time. You can organize things like you would a regular bulletin board. The sky is the limit on the fun DIY projects that you can find for yourself on this site. Of course Pinterest also has an app that you can download to your smart phone for pinning and re- pinning where ever you are. Become a member today by requesting an invite. Places and cultures J.4.10 Talk about art in basic terms Short summary of lesson and essential ideas/Big Ideas/Theme: I started out this lesson with the reading of the book There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. After I read the book I explained and showed examples of people who are 100 years old. Students were asked to think about and draw what they might look like when they are 100. Most of the students have 94 years to wait, but they did an awesome job imagining what wrinkles, one’s hair, and teeth will look like when they are 100. Artist(s), vocabulary and works of art utilized in lesson: Google images of people who are 100 years old Lesson preparation and lesson procedure Day 1 Demonstration: 1. On a 12X18 piece of white drawing paper draw the oval part of the face with pencil 2. Add ears, eyes, hair, mouth nose, neck and shoulders 3. Add details like wrinkles, facial hair, eye lashes, teeth. 4. Trace all lines with Sharpie marker 5. Paint face with tempera cake paints, water and brush 6. Place painting in drying rack as low as it can go Day2 Demonstration: 1. Pass back 100 year old faces to students 2. Students finish the face adding detail with crayons for places that need to be fixed or touched up 3. Students cut out face on the lines and mount to a colored piece of construction paper 4. Students can add a shirt from wallpaper 5. Students can add accessories like buttons, beads, neck ties, earrings, broaches, etc. 6. Writing Portion: Include three sentences about what you will be like when you are 100 years old. What will you do all day? One of my favorites was from Theta: “When I am 100 years old I am going to feed the birds. I am going to soak my teeth at night.
