In her own words here is who Katie is and why she's an exceptional art educator. I grew up on a resort in Hazelhurst Wisconsin. I graduated from Lakeland Union High School in 1990. I went to Carroll College and got a BS in commercial art. I decided I did not want to spend my life on a computer, so I went to UM Duluth for my teaching degree. I took the class art for elementary educators and found my passion. Everyone told me that I should not go into art ed, because I would never find a job. I did find a job in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, where I taught K-8 art for five years. I have spent the last 11 years teaching mostly Native American students at Lac du Flambeau Public School. I am lucky enough to teach in a community that is rich in culture and values the art. The 8th graders and I do a mural every year at the school, which I am very proud of. I am the school photographer, taking photos at all the school events. I put together the yearbook every year. I set up art shows at school and in the community. I have sent art work down to the Lee Yawkey Woodson Art Museum for display. I take students to art workshops to work with local artists. I am a museum junkie, so my favorite time of year is my art trip to Minneapolis. I am part of a group of local art teachers who take a group of 8th graders for an overnight to Minneapolis. We explore museums and cultural spots throughout the twin cities. I big on sharing student art work, so I am always working hard on my displays around school, newspaper and social media. I also do artwork for myself. I sell large painted wood medallions. Here are some fabulous photos of Katie and her students. Congratulations again for your commitment to excellence Katie. |
