WAEA Board Members Meet in Wausau

The first weekend in May was a busy one for new and outgoing WAEA Board members as they convened in Wausau, WI to celebrate the past year and to prepare for 2018-19 school year.  There were many fabulous accomplishments saluted during the weekend including the wonderful Youth Art Month festivities held throughout the state, the cool regional professional development being offered and much more.  Members of the board also had the opportunity to create art during their tour of the Leigh Yawkey Art Center.  They used the fantastic printmaking studio spaces and created beautiful linocut prints.  Wausau promises to be an outstanding venue for the fall conference.  Congratulations to the new board members.  Check back here soon for more on the 2018-19 Board.  To see some of the dates planned visit the Calendar page.

NAEA 2018 in Seattle Was Really Special

A number of WAEA members attended the Spring NAEA National Art Education Conference in Seattle recently.  They had nothing but glowing things to say.  For those who have never been to a national conference it is truly worth the expense and effort to get there.

Here are a few thoughts:

From Tiffany Beltz, WAEA President
Seattle was a fantastic location for the 2018 NAEA Convention. Beautiful city, wonderful people, amazing ideas, fabulous art, and lasting connections made over the course of four days.  I am feeling inspired and renewed and can't wait for Boston 2019!

From Devon Calvert, WAEA President Elect
As always, the NAEA Convention was outstanding! Where else can you find keynote speaker Nick Cave, 4,000+ art educators, art teachin' friends from around the country, and a Dale Chihuly museum all in one place!?

WI DPI Announces Changes to Licensure

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is considering a number of changes to licensure rules.  There are many ideas including:
  • Starting January 1, 2018, allowing Initial and Professional Educators to use professional growth goals and work in Educator Effectiveness as another option to renew or advance their license.
This change puts emphasis on professional development of all kinds and makes our WAEA fall conference worth every penny! Come to the fall conference it just makes "cents" !  For more details on the changes proposed by DPI see the link below.
