My name is Samantha Powell and I am excited to be the Interim Historian for the WAEA Board this year. I look forward to meeting other Wisconsin teachers and student teachers alike, and to creating a streamlined online database for WAEA printed materials.

As a senior art education student at UW-River Falls, it is my goal to learn and develop methods to help students understand different subjects, like literature, science, or math, with art as their guide, right alongside learning how to explain art in its many branches through other subjects.

Art was my first language and I practiced it often with my dad, who taught me how to draw, paint, and see. My mom taught me how to use those skills in the clever way she would create a whole lot of somethings out of a great deal of nothing.

Both of my parents wanted to be teachers, but neither finished enough schooling to do so. Yet, their unfulfilled career goals directly influenced the kind of parents they were and they made our home my very first art classroom. Additionally, my teachers at our K-12 school in Butternut, WI, were like second parents to me, given their integral roles within our tight-knit community.

So wanting to become an art teacher seems to have grown naturally from these roots and it is these roots that continue to nurture that desire. I anticipate that being a part of the WAEA will help me expand my root system and grow many new branches.
