WAEA History & Purpose

History & Purpose The Wisconsin Art Education Association was founded in 1950 as a state organization to further scholarship and excellence in art education.

  • We provide opportunities for professional development and we encourage the study and implementation of best practices in our discipline.
  • We provide out educators with professional leadership, guidance, and resources essential to promote art in the schools and communities of our state.
  • We advocate for visual art education as necessary for the quality education of all students PK-12 and higher education, and promote its inclusion as one of the core academic basics in the general school curriculum.
  • We seek to increase access to visual arts education for all students regardless of race, economic status, or geographic location.
  • We promote communication and understanding among the various arts groups, educational organizations, and visual arts educators.

To achieve these goals, the Wisconsin Art Education Association works in partnership with public and private schools, colleges and universities, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Alliance for Arts Education (WAAE), Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC), Wisconsin Arts Board, the National Art Education Association (NAEA), museums, and art materials suppliers.

Members are encouraged to participate as conference presenters, Board members, and Visual Arts Classic coaches. Members are also encouraged to participate in Youth Art Month activities on the regional and state level.
