To align with the Wisconsin Art Education Association mission to promote excellence in visual art and design education for all students by showcasing student’s talents and abilities. WAEA selected the work of Terrina Fellenz, Grade 12, “Vase” and Hannah Schwane, Grade 11, “Uncertain Perseverance” to receive the WAEA Sponsored Scholastic Art and Writing Award exhibited at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Both artists will receive a check for 250.00 and a one-year membership to WAEA.

On January 14, 2012, North High School hosted its 1st Annual Art Teacher Idea Exchange hosted by the Wisconsin Art Education Association and local WAEA members, Carol Rokicki of North/South High School and Brian Sommersberger of Random Lake Elementary School worked together along with Lee Amborn of Black River Falls Middle School to develop an open invitation to K-12 art educators in the North East Region, which included local colleges and private schools. Lee Amborn has been doing the Annual Art Teacher’s Idea Exchange in his district for the last 28 years.

Carol and Brian thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for art teachers to get together and exchange ideas/lesson plans and instructional thoughts. Those who participated were told to bring numerous copies of one lesson plan plus visual samples. Teachers were also asked to bring one “teacher tip” to share. Participants were excited about having the opportunity to see different ideas and approaches to art instruction. 

About 10 art educators attended the 1st Annual Art Teacher’s Idea Exchange from various grade levels and districts. The 2nd Annual Art Teacher Annual Idea Exchange is already being planned for next year.

Brian Sommersberger is currently serving as WAEA’s North East Regional Vice-President. Carol Rokicki is currently serving as WAEA’s Secondary Representative. For video and photos from the event, visit

Art and Design Education

Art and Design Education programs include

- Fine art (traditional areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and so on),
- Design arts (environment design like architecture, landscape, urban planning, interior design, etc.; object design like products, furniture, transportation, fashion, appliances, etc.; information design like publications, websites, video, film, photography, etc.; and experience design like interactive exhibits, toys, games, events, theme parks, etc.),
- Vernacular art (crafts, festivals, costumes, mascots, lawn decorations, folk art, etc.), and
- Visual communication (maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, etc.)

The inclusion of design in visual art education developed naturally from a growing awareness of the importance of design in the daily life of the culture. The products we use daily, from packaging and clothing to pens, cars, websites, and media are products of the designer's art. Through the vision and leadership of Dr. Martin Rayala, DPI's former art consultant, Wisconsin became one of the early leaders in design education.

Two other areas that further expand the world of visual art are visual communication and visual culture. Visual communication grew from recognition of the importance, efficiency, and clarity of communication with pictures in many knowledge domains. Visual culture reflects the methods of the culture, ranging from its politics, economics, and ethics to pop and folk culture.

Melvin Pontious is honored for service to arts education in Wisconsin as he retires from the state Department of Public Instruction.Representatives from the arts community across Wisconsin came together Thursday evening, June 2, 2011, to honor Mel for his many years of tireless service advocating and guiding Arts Education in Wisconsin. The event was held at the Music Education Building in Waunakee. Mel has been an active member of the WAEA Board since the early 2000's. We will all miss his gentle, in depth counsel and dedication. We could always rely on a speedy reply to our questions and concerns.

Enjoy your retirement Mel.  But don't be surprised if we still call you for guidance and advice.
